Driver Ratings - Russian Grand Prix

With rain in Russia causing chaos, everything turned on it's head with less than five laps to go.

Here’s how we rated the drivers at the Russian Grand Prix…

Win number 100, and what a way to do it. Faultless after his first pit stop, Hamilton was hunting Norris down before making the switch to inters that won him the race.

Max Verstappen - 8

Verstappen will be thanking the rain gods for gifting him P2. Without rain, he would have finished P7 (following a poor stint on the hard tyre) but he managed to limit the damaged caused by Hamilton and Mercedes with some skilful driving in the wet.

Carlos Sainz - 9

Sainz showed his quality throughout the weekend and came away with a podium and 15 points as a reward. He didn't put a foot wrong, even with the weather changing and showed up his team mate yet again, by securing his third podium of the year.

Daniel Ricciardo - 8

He may not have got the headlines like his team mate, but he did come away with more points, and that's what matters. After a strong start, he got his head down and used his experience to fight all race and grab a well deserved P5 at the flag.

Valtteri Bottas - 5

On paper, starting in P17 and finishing in P5 looks like a good result, but this was far from the case. Mercedes had hoped he could hold up Verstappen, but the Dutchman sailed past with easy early on, while the Finn got stuck behind Gasly for a number of laps. Despite this, he made the correct call when the weather changed and got a reward.

Fernando Alonso - 9

A podium was possible when the weather turned, but the Spaniard stayed out for one too many laps which dropped him back down the order. I said it on the podcast earlier in the year, Alonso could be one of our surprise winners this season, and if he races like this again, it could happen.

Lando Norris - 9

Racing is cruel, and Lando Norris found that out first hand. A superb Saturday was followed by a brilliant first stint on Sunday before he decided to stay out when the rain came down. He still got some points, which means the battle with Ferrari will continue on.

Kimi Raikkonen - 9

After two races away, Raikkonen returned to the grid with a performance worthy of a former world champion. He battled his way up to P8 early on before keeping his cool to bring back some much needed points that could help keep Alfa Romeo in the hunt for P8 in the constructors championship.

Sergio Perez - 7

A P9 finish wasn't fair for Checo, especially after an excellent drive on the hard compound tyre. But despite a very impressive 37 laps, his work was undone by a poor pit stop and the decision to stay out on slicks when the rain started to pour.

George Russell - 8

P3 to P10 may not sound impressive to many, but it was a brilliant result for Williams, who have hit some great form as of late. His car's lack of pace was clear to see, but he kept his head down and was rewarded with a point for his efforts.

Lance Stroll - 6

A mad weekend for Stroll. After going from P7 to P4 at the start, he managed to run in P8 after his pit stop before making contact with both Vettel and Gasly, earning him a 10 second penalty.

Sebastian Vettel - 7

Vettel once again provided fans with some great racing, but didn't get any rewards for it after dropping out of the top ten once the rain started to fall. He will be hoping Aston Martin can help him hit better form towards the end of the season.

Pierre Gasly - 6

Not a poor drive, but not a good one either. He couldn't find the pace to get into the top ten but did hold off Bottas for a number of laps, and out performed his team mate, again.

Esteban Ocon - 5

Second best to Alonso all weekend and could only threated P10 at moments throughout the race. He'll be looking forward to Turkey.

Charles Leclerc - 7

Leclerc gained seven places in the opening few laps before he decided to preserve rubber and settle in for a long stint. However he was one of the drivers who decided not to pit for inters and quickly fell back.

Antonio Giovinazzi - 5

Outshone by his team mate in a race where he needed to perform. Giovinazzi may not have had any radio for the race, but being outperformed by his team mate is not a good look.

Yuki Tsunoda - 4

A decent Saturday performance was undone with another poor Sunday. Yuki needs to sort himself out, or he could find himself at the wrong end of a Red Bull driver change.

Nikita Mazepin - 5

Possibly his best race of the season so far. Mazepin climbed up to P12 after the start and and defended well for the rest of his first stint, but that’s all.

Did not finish

Nicholas Latifi - 5

Unfortunate to start from the back after an engine change. Despite a fresh power unit, he couldn't make up many places and ended his race after crashing out.

Mick Schumacher - 6

Slowest on track in the first stint, but picked up the pace after pitting.
