No rain in Belgium after so much pre-race promise. Damn you weather reports.
Here are your Belgian GP driver ratings.
Lewis Hamilton – 9
Seven races. Five wins. Another amazingly managed race. The only threat briefly came from Bottas but an epic middle sector increased the gap to two seconds and no-one could get close to him after that.
Valtteri Bottas – 7
Soundly beaten by Lewis Hamilton in qualifying before finishing in P2 yet again. A decent start and safety car couldn’t help his race at all.
Max Verstappen – 7
Yet again Max Verstappen provided the ony resistance to the dominant Mercedes. Having to hold of Ricciardo on lap one, his race became a lonely one to the end.
Daniel Ricciardo – 9
An amazing race for Renault with Ricciardo making the most of their pace for a P4 finish and a bonus point for fastest lap. Bring on Monza.
Esteban Ocon – 7
Despite finishing P5, it’s tough to rate Ocon’s race as he finished over 20 seconds behind his team mate. But this result has made the constructors championship a feisty competition again.
Alex Albon – 6
Encouraging signs for Albon were undone by a stupid strategy (yet again) from his team. Leaving him out on a medium tyre they know wouldn’t last for 30+ laps meant he finished nearly 30 seconds behind his team mate.
Lando Norris – 7
Going under the radar for the first stint, Lando brought it on the hard compound tyre and passed Lance Stroll for important constructors points. It’s just a shame we didn’t get the chance to see ‘Scenario 7’ in the final few laps.
Pierre Gasly – 9
After getting screwed by the safety car, Gasly made overtake after overtake to ensure he got yet another decent points haul. A fitting tribute to his close friend Anthoine Hubert.
Lance Stroll – 5
A disappointing afternoon for Racing Point meant only 3 points were added to their tally. Tyre management let the Canadian down in his second stint in a race he could have finished much higher.
Sergio Perez – 6
Being left out on soft tyres when the safety car made an appearance meant the Mexican was yet again finishing behind his team mate. With that being said, he made the tyres last longer than they should have and was screwed over by a poorly thought out double stack.
Daniil Kvyat – 4
I forgot Kvyat was a Formula One driver during this race. Starting P11 on fresh mediums should have meant a solid points finish, but he couldn’t make any progress up the field. Personally, I think he should have looked elsewhere while his stock was so high after his podium finish in Germany last season because I don’t see him being an Alpha Tauri driver next season.
Kimi Raikkonen – 7
The four time winner at Spa couldn’t get a points finish, but did drive an amazing race to threaten those who were in the top 10, especially with the Ferrari power unit behind him.
Sebastian Vettel – 6
Vettel must be feeling relieved about leaving the Scuderia because that car is a complete dog. The Italian team will be dreading Monza.
Charles Leclerc – 6
A bold two-stop strategy didn’t work out due to the clear lack of power from the Ferrari engine. A great start did see him punch briefly into the top ten before falling down the order.
Romain Grosjean – 6
The Frenchman had the edge over his team-mate which will be seen as a personal win. Apart from that, there’s little to celebrate for the Haas driver.
Nicholas Latifi – 5
A two stop strategy put the Canadian ahead of Magnussen but that was all there was to celebrate for Latifi after a very poor qualifying performance against his team mate.
Kevin Magnussen – 4
Last in qualifying. Last in the race. A weekend to forget.
Did not finish
Antonio Giovinazzi – 4
He should have let Raikkonen by instead of dangerously pushing on and causing an accident. I really can’t see him keeping his seat in 2021 with multiple Ferrari academy drivers performing so strongly in F2.
George Russell – 6
An unfortunate exit for George Russell after getting caught by a loose Alfa Romeo tyre. Very happy to say that the halo wasn’t needed, but it’s shown why it could be one day.
Carlos Sainz – N/A
I mean, he didn’t technically start so it’s not fair to give him a score.
