Driver Ratings - Portugese Grand Prix

The ups and downs of the track created a challenge for the grid, but some rose to the occasion in Portimao, while others were left behind.
Here’s how we rate the drivers after 12 races...
Lewis Hamilton - 10
92 wins. What an achievement.
Hamilton did it in style and completely dominated not only his team-mate, but the whole grid. Picking up the pace to overtake Bottas after 15 laps (and a poor start) lead to Hamilton putting in fastest lap after fastest lap, while managing the wear on his tyres perfectly. If he carries on like this, he'll be world champion for the seventh time before we know it.
Valtteri Bottas - 7
A story we've come to expect for Bottas. A strong couple of practise sessions but no response to Hamilton when it really mattered. Losing out on pole set the tone while it ended with desperation by asking for the soft tyre in the final stint of the race.
Max Verstappen - 8
Too fast for everyone else, but not fast enough to keep up with the Mercedes. Verstappen is finding himself in something of a groundhog day with each passing weekend. A punchy start most likely gave him hope of a better result, but it wasn't to be. He's got the ability to win a championship, but Red Bull needs to provide him with a better car.
Charles Leclerc: - 9
A stand-out performer in qualifying was turned into an amazing result come race day. After a poor start (and once he got the tyres heated up) he worked his way back up the order is his notably better performing Ferrari. Quite possibly the best drive of his career so far.
Pierre Gasly - 9
Is Gasly the driver of the season? Possibly, and races like the one at Portimao only gave more fuel to that thought. Despite losing a place at the start, he worked his way back beautifully on the soft compound to take P5 at the chequered flag.
Carlos Sainz - 8
It'll be a race of mixed feelings for Sainz, especially after taking the lead on the first lap. But struggles on the soft tyre dropped him down the order once the top three passed him. A positive is the points he helped the team pick up against the Racing Point cars means they keep P3 in the constructors championship in their sight.
Sergio Perez - 8
Dropping to the back of the grid at the start, Perez worked his way by not putting a foot wrong all race. He managed his tyres well, and did all he could to keep Gasly and Sainz behind before the rubber couldn't hold on any longer.
Esteban Ocon - 8
Ocon making his tyres last for 53 laps should have made him driver of the day. Add in finishing ahead of his team-mate, it was a very decent showing for the young Frenchman.
Daniel Ricciardo - 6
Ricciardo will be a rather unhappy Aussie, especially after he managed to finish in the top six for the past five races in a row. A decent start set him up for a good race, but tyre wear got the better of him which meant he fell down the order.
Sebastian Vettel - 6
A much needed point for Vettel, especially after such a poor start. It's odd seeing a Ferrari have to make a recovery drive to P10, but it's what we've (sadly) come to expect.
Kimi Raikkonen - 9
An unbelievable start from the Finn, gaining ten places was some of the best driving we've seen all season. He couldn't hold on unfortunately and quickly dropped down the order.
Alex Albon - 4
A terrible showing at the Nurburgring has been followed up by a terrible showing at Portimao. A bad start meant he was held up by slower cars in the opening laps and he couldn't recover his race from there.
Lando Norris - 6
It looked good for Lando in the opening stages, rising up to P4 before dropping to P7 where he may have expected to finish, but a late lunge from Lance Stroll meant he finished well outside the top 10.
George Russell - 7
With rumours around his seat under the new owners, Russell needed to put in a good performance, and his did just that. A solid qualifying and running as high of P7 is a great way to make his mark.
Antonio Giovinazzi: 5
Like the track in Portugal, Giovinazzi is having a very up and down season. And this race was one of the downs. Well off Raikkonen and with the back markers breathing down his neck, it looked like the Italian could have finished at the back of the pack.
Kevin Magnussen - 5
A tough weekend for Magnussen, slower than his team-mate and officially losing his seat for next season. It'll be tough to see where he goes from here, but a spell in IndyCar could be on the cards.
Romain Grosjean - 5
Out-qualified his team-mate and nearly managed to finish ahead of the Dane. Magnussen took the spot ahead of him because the Frenchman couldn't stay within the lines.
Nicholas Latifi - 4
It's tough to judge Latifi, he's done better than people expected, but still needs to improve. A full second behind Russell in qualifying and many more in the race is not an ideal way to spend a weekend.
Daniil Kvyat - 4
After some strong showings, I once again forgot Daniil Kvyat was a Formula 1 driver. A tough weekend due to a time penalty was made worse with his team-mate finishing in the top five.
Did not finish
Lance Stroll - 2
An awful weekend for Stroll. Crashed with Verstappen in practise (not entirely his fault) and Norris (entirely his fault) in the race.
